WHS BYOD Student/Parent Guideline Agreement Form
Wakefield High School is excited to announce that we are part of the second cohort of schools in Wake County chosen as a pilot school for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). We look forward to this exciting opportunity because we know it will enable our students to become future-ready, empowering them with the “4 Cs” of 21st Century learning - collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking to make decisions and solve problems. In this initiative, students are encouraged to bring their own technology devices to the classroom to enhance their learning experiences. Teachers have the option to immediately or gradually incorporate BYOD in their lesson planning. This document is a contract governing the establishment of this new program at WHS. Please note that students who cannot bring outside technology will be able to access and utilize the school’s equipment. No student will be left out of classroom instruction.
Definition of “Device”:
For purposes of BYOD, “device” means a privately-owned wireless and/or portable electronic hand- held equipment that includes, but is not limited to, smart phones, portable internet devices, handheld entertainment systems, or portable information technology systems that can be used for word processing, wireless internet access (laptop/tablet), etc.
Security and Damages:
Responsibility for the security of the device resides with the individual student. WHS is not liable for any device stolen or damaged on campus. If a device is stolen or damaged, it will be handled through the administrative office similar to other personal artifacts that are impacted in similar situations. We highly recommended that skins (decals) and other custom touches are used to physically identify your device from others. Additionally, protective cases for technology are encouraged.
WCPSS Expectations:
Students participating in BYOD will be given access to the WCPSS BYOD wifi. WCPSS BYOD wifi may only be accessed while on campus. Students are expected to adhere to the following WCPSS BYOD Guidelines: No Touch (teachers and students cannot touch devices), Access WCPSS BYOD Wifi only (no 3G or 4G service), no printing at school, and must have and use a WCPSS email account.
WCPSS Technology Responsible Use Board Policy 3225
This policy governs the use of WCPSS electronic information resources and defines students' proper conduct and responsibilities while using WCPSS electronic information resources. View the full policy here.
BYOD Student/Parent Agreement:
Students and parents/guardians participating in BYOD must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, as well as all Board policies, particularly Student Responsible Use Board Policy 3225
Furthermore, the student must agree to the following conditions:
WHS BYOD AGREEMENT
Parents and Students must initial each item:
____ ____ We understand that the student takes full responsibility for his or her device, and the school is not responsible for the security and safety of the student-owned device.
____ ____ We understand that the device must be in silent mode while on school campus and while riding a school bus.
____ ____ We understand that the device may not be used to commit academic dishonesty on assignments or tests or for non-instructional purposes.
____ ____ We understand that the student must have and utilize the WCPSS issued email account and access only content on the device or internet sites which are relevant to the curriculum.
____ ____ We understand that the student must comply with teachers' requests to shut down the device, as teachers will not touch the device but absolutely reserve the right to ask student to shut off device.
____ ____ We understand that the student acknowledges that the school's network filters will be applied to one's connection to the internet, and the student will not attempt to bypass them.
____ ____ We understand that any attempt by the student to bring on premises or infect the network with a Virus, Trojan, or program designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provide access to unauthorized data or information is in violation of the Technology Responsible Use policy and will result in disciplinary actions.
____ ____ We understand that processing or accessing information on school property related to “hacking,” altering, or bypassing network security policies is in violation of the Technology Responsible Use policy and will result in disciplinary actions.
____ ____ We understand that student printing from personal devices will not be possible at school, and while at school, all devices will utilize the WCPSS BYOD wifi.
I understand and will abide by the above guidelines. I further understand that any violation is unethical and may result in the loss of my network and/or laptop privileges as well as other disciplinary action.
